Mamma Mia – Bognor Regis – Good Food Guide Review
Mamma Mia could easily be described as the hidden Italian gem a stone’s throw from Bognor seafront. Based on Nyewood Lane in Aldwick, the family run business has been open for around 10 years – and is in the capable hands of proprietor Max Miricola.
The relaxed and informal setting offers authentic Italian food and wine at reasonable prices, along with friendly and knowledgeable service.
The menu options are vast, catering for all tastes. Whether it’s pizza, pasta, antipasti’s or sweet deserts, Mamma Mia has got you covered.
“For my visit to try out Max’s delicacies I opted for the Formaggi, Pere e Miele – a selection of cheese accompanied by sliced pears and honey. Honey and pear I hear you say?! Well, this quirky sweet addition really compliments the saltiness of the pecorino, gorgonzola, parmesan and goat’s cheese on offer. The softness and salty taste of the gorgonzola was the real highlight of this dish, accompanied by the sweeter options.”
“My partner chose the Funghi all’Aglio – pan-fried mushrooms in a garlic and white wine sauce served with crusty bread. “Yummy” was the word when asked how it tasted. The white wine sauce really helped bring out the flavour of the delicate mushrooms and the crusty bread was the perfect accompaniment.”
“The main course was a choice between pasta and pizza and we chose one of each. The pizza choice was the Presidente. “Fit for the President” states the menu – and that’s no lie! Chicken, mushroom and pancetta to add to the mozzarella and tomato topping. The tenderness of the chicken with the saltiness of the pancetta brought the dish alive. The homemade base was impressively light and fluffy.”
“We also chose the recommended Linguine Rucola e Gamberetti – partly for the impressive name, and partly because it had alcohol in it… who wouldn’t? In fact, this dish comes highly recommended from the staff in the restaurant and comprises of prawns, rocket, garlic, cherry tomatoes, chilli… and vermouth??… (no me neither!) Vermouth is a traditional Italian spirit, very similar to Martini that we get here.”
“Vermouth or not, this dish was really enhanced by the pepperiness of the rocket and the tender, juicy prawns. The extra chilli gave the meal an added kick and the linguine was light too, which meant there was still room for pud!”
“Max boasts an impressive dessert menu of homemade classics – tiramisu, chocolate cake and lemon cheesecake and a selection of ice creams and gelato.”
“I opted for the lemon cheesecake with cream and on tucking in I was met with a very pleasant surprise… the taste of amaretto. It turns out Max used amaretti biscuits to make the base, topped that with lemon curd and added the light fluffy cheesecake on the top. A very impressive find and I can honestly say THE best cheesecake I’ve ever tasted.”
“The chocolate cake, on the other side of the table, was also a real gem on the menu. Light and airy and a perfect way to finish the meal, topped with a generous helping of gooey chocolate fudge.”
Mamma Mia comes highly recommended from Spirit FM for its relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and tasty food. You come away from a three course meal feeling very satisfied but not overly stuffed… and there’s plenty of Bognor’s promenade to walk off the food afterwards.
